Abstract:
Trial trenching evaluation undertaken along the route of the Fastlink section of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route and sample excavation at Crossley Cairn. Palaeoenvironmental peat sampling carried out at Backburn Moss. 483 trial trenches were excavated (24,869m²). The majority of the features identified related to post-improvement agriculture - field drains and areas of field clearance stones. Sample excavation at Crossley Cairn suggested that it was formed through post-improvement field clearance. Four sites were revealed by the trial trenching, including two areas of pits and linear features; a possible alignment of shallow pits; and a stone spread or surface which was situated on the site of a farmstead annotated 'Broomhill' on the First Edition OS map. A sherd of prehistoric pottery was recovered from one of the areas of pits and linear features, but lithics from the other area of pits and linear features proved undiagnostic. In addition to the sites identified during trial trenching, two large upstanding cairns were identified, one located at Fishermyre and the other near Stranog Hill. No invasive archaeological work was undertaken in relation to these cairns and their date and function are unknown. An overlapping core was extracted from the deepest point within Backburn Moss. Probing along a transect close to this sampling point confirmed that the base of the profile was gradual and formed within a very shallow basin. Palynological analysis has demonstrated that the Backburn Moss preserves a continuous record of environmental change from c.9,550 Cal yrs BP to the present. The radiocarbon dating of the core enables inferences about the timing and rate of environmental change. An apparent sequence of fenland to clearance and back to fenland between 4,840 and 3,190 Cal yr BP, across the Neolithic and Bronze Age cultural boundary, has been observed in the data.
