Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) was commissioned by Michael and Xochi Birch to undertake a historic building assessment of The Manor House, associated barns, and the Farmers Arms, Woolsery. This work was undertaken in order to understand the date, form, function and development of the buildings from their origins, with the aim of informing the impact of any proposed development on the historic elements of the buildings. The buildings at Woolsery represent a typical village group; the Manor House near the church with associated buildings and a row of attached cottages and barns to the south. The Manor House contains a wealth of period features from the 15th to the 18th century and has surviving medieval structural remains. The outbuildings represent an important in-town farmstead but have been much altered in the 20th century. The Farmers Arms and buildings are of vernacular form and materials with the main building being a fairly well preserved 18th century cottage with 20th century alterations.
