Abstract:
A trial trenching evaluation was undertaken in the area of the sunken garden. The trial trenching evaluation revealed the footings of a broad stone wall sealed by the topsoil and cut in to the subsoil. It ran to the south of, and parallel to, the current garden wall that is first shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1895. No wall is shown at this location on the Ordnance survey map of 1853 and it seems probable that the wall footings relate to an earlier garden boundary. It is not considered that this wall relates to any earlier residential structures in this area. No other archaeological deposits or finds were revealed. A monitored strip was carried out during construction of a new extension, garages and services around the rear of Woodhall House. Dumped deposits were discovered which contained domestic refuse (oyster shell, coal and charcoal) and lime mortar. They are considered likely to be levelling deposits associated with renovations to Woodhall House when it was recast as late Georgian mansion. A box drain was also found which probably dates from this conversion. A wall revealed further to the west was thought to be part of an early garden wall.
