Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief and analysis of environmental samples was undertaken associated with geotechnical works at the site of the proposed foot and cycle bridge over the River Severn to the south of Diglis Weir (NGR: SO 8473 5319; Fig 1). The work was undertaken on behalf of Sustrans Connect2 and Worcestershire County Council in response to a brief prepared by Worcester City Museum Archaeology Section. The sole archaeological fieldwork undertaken within the development area was a watching brief of geotechnical works associated with an earlier phase of the development (Daffern, 2009). Despite this, there is evidence of prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval activity in the vicinity. No archaeological remains were encountered during this investigation with the natural alluvial sequence being identified in both the watching brief and the geoarchaeological analysis. The organic deposit that was encountered during previous work was not present slightly to the south of where it was first identified suggesting that preservation and therefore potential is sporadic within this area of the Severn floodplain. Palynological remains were poorly preserved with only infrequent identifications of pollen grains and spores suggesting disturbance of deposits and/or a fluctuating water table. This hypothesis was supported by the geoarchaeological analysis which suggested that channel migration and water table fluctuation were dominant features of the River Severn's Holocene evolution.
