Abstract: |
A watching Brief was undertaken by AOC Archaeology on resurfacing works along the High Street, Edinburgh, from the High Street/George IV Bridge intersection (NT 25666 73592) to the High Street /Cockburn Street intersection (NT 25890 73642). During these works the remains of earlier buildings were found. The most significant of these remains are thought to be walls pertaining to the Old Tolbooth, at one time the home of the Scottish Parliament, as well as the very residual remains of the luckenbooths attached to the Old Tolbooth. The works consisted of stripping down the existing tarmac road surface to allow for the reinstatement of the cobbled stone road. An area 6.5 m wide along the length of the road was stripped to an average depth of 0.65 m below the existing road level, removing layers of road material and modern 'made ground' down to a brown sandy clay natural subsoil. |
