Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd on land at the western corner of Holyrood Road and Viewcraig Gardens, City of Edinburgh. The evaluation has identified: 18th/19th century building remains along the northern side of the site. These appear to be thoroughly demolished with only the southern wall found during the evaluation. This building is present on the OS 1853 map although it could have been built as early as the late 18th century as buildings are shown as present in this area on Ainslie's map (1804). The remains of recent structures in trenches 2 and 3 to the south of the earlier building remains. These are constructed from modern materials and are first mapped on the 1959 OS maps of the area. It is thought that these belonged to the University of Edinburgh as staff accommodation. None of the other buildings indicated on the 1853 map survive as the site has been reduced to bedrock across this area with the building along the northern side only surviving because it was terraced in to the slope.
