Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken on behalf of British Waterways of the New Wharf and lime kilns at Tardebigge, Worcestershire (NGR: SO 9949 6934; HER ref. WSM 35059). The New Wharf, opened in 1811, initially comprised of the wharfage, an additional basin, a stone warehouse, machine house and weighbridge, and was primarily used by coal and agricultural merchants. Brick cottages and stables were also constructed to house the canal workers and their families. The capacity of the wharf was expanded in 1830, but changing conditions meant that the Worcester and Birmingham Canal Company went into receivership in 1868. The area witnessed several further changes throughout the 20th century and is now the British Waterways depot. The lime kilns were in operation from at least 1814 and comprise a bank of five |
