Abstract:
A desk-based assessment for the historic environment and a programme of building recording was undertaken at a parcel of land known as the 'South West Gateway', Dudley, West Midlands (NGR SO 941 900; HBSMR 12551) on behalf of the Urban Design Team of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council. The archaeological potential of the entire study area is high, which has been demonstrated through archaeological excavation of the former Hanson's Brewery site. It is unlikely that that archaeological deposits of prehistoric, Roman or early medieval date are present within the study area. However there is good evidence that a range of archaeological evidence that survives as buried deposits within the study area. Consideration of the later development and present-day character of the study area suggests that extensive medieval and post-medieval deposits survive either side of the High Street, whereas post-medieval bell pits are virtually certain to survive to the north of Greystone Street. The entire study area also contains buried remains of 19th century houses and associated structures, the archaeological potential of which has not been assessed. The archaeological potential of the churchyard of St Thomas's has been indicated through archaeological observation, and the entire churchyard is an archaeological site of very high potential. The archaeological potential of the rest of the study area consists of extensive deposits that relate to the urban development of Dudley from the medieval period through to the 19th century. The desk-based study did not identify these parts of the study area as containing sites of national importance (such as, for instance, post-medieval industrial sites). However the archaeological evidence within the study area as a whole is significant, as evidence for the social and economic development of Dudley, and this archaeological resource deserves careful consideration in the context of future development in the study area.
