Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. undertook an archaeological evaluation of land at Gordon House, Fore Street, Witheridge, Devon, prior to the construction of a domestic dwelling. Desk-based assessment of the proposal site suggested the potential for the presence of archaeological remains relating to buildings identified on 19th century mapping of Witheridge. All four trenches opened during the evaluation confirmed the presence of former structures on the site with a series of heavily robbed stone and brick walls along with several external cobble and internal concrete surfaces. These remains are likely to represent the footings and floors of at least four separate structures of probably 19th century origin. All of the buildings were constructed directly onto the natural and were covered by demolition deposits from the landscaping of the site during the post-war housing developments in Witheridge. The presence of a small quantity of medieval pottery hints at earlier activity on the site, though any features had been destroyed by the 19th century phase of construction. The historic mapping suggests that prior to the 19th century the area surrounding Fore Street may have been agricultural land, and this small quantity of finds may simply represent manuring activities.
