Abstract:
A full strip took place over an area of around 630,000 sq m due for development at the Curragh area north-east of Girvan. Works during the adjacent Phase 1 in 2012 had previously produced Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and medieval dates within a fairly condensed area. The Phase 2 strip revealed the southern section of a previously excavated Iron Age enclosure, a burnt mound deposit within a possible trough and related features, a sub-angular alignment of 23 large pits and further linear alignment of 7 pits, a ring groove structure with internal features, and additionally a wide range of further pits, posthole and spread features representing various concentrations of activity, some of which is potentially structural. The features appeared to be mostly settlement or domestic in nature, with the possible exception of the larger pit alignment, and likely represent more than one phase of use across distinct areas. The material culture assemblage was relatively small and mostly comprised of flints and several sherds of prehistoric ceramic. B Spence 2014
