Abstract:
A development proposal by James Barr on behalf of Northern Marine Management in respect of the ongoing development of Clydebank Business Park (Planning ref:DC13/177) required an archaeological watching brief and programme of test pitting. The development was situated on ground that was formerly an element of the Singer Factory (opened 1885, closed 1980 and now demolished). This portion of the site is recorded as both a football ground and subsequently the railway sidings for the Singer factory. The southernmost portion of the site also covers the former line of the Forth-Clyde Canal (constructed 1790). This portion of the historic canal was cut off and abandoned during railway construction work, with the new line running to the south, lying over the railway tunnel. As an element of the proposed Site Investigation works at Clydebank Business Park two trenches and one test pit were excavated across the abandoned line of the Forth-Clyde Canal. A further six test pits were excavated, though outside the line of the Forth and Clyde Canal After consultation with WoSAS it was agreed that the evidence collected from the these excavations suggested that if the remains of the abandoned line survive they do so at a depth greater then 3m. It is therefore unlikely that the placement of building services and foundations would disturb the remains unless they exceed this depth. A Matthews 2013
