Abstract: |
Results of a geophysical survey and rapid impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at Kenwith Castle, Abbotsham, Devon, prior to a proposed retirement development. The geophysical survey indicates that there are archaeological features present within the area of the proposed development, including a historic field boundary, land drains and a terraced platform located in the north-east corner of the site. The archaeological value of these deposits is deemed to be low. The impact assessment concludes that Kenwith Castle and Kenwith Castle Mound, in their current form, formed elements within a designed 'pocket landscape'. The impact of the proposed development is assessed as negative/minor to negative/moderate, as the setting of both the house and the Mound have already been compromised by recent development in the area, and the proposed site lies outside the immediate setting of the house. |
