Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Taylor Wimpey UK Ltd. and JJ Gallagher Ltd. to undertake an archaeological evaluation and strip map on Land off Stanton Road (NGR SJ 75557 07698) and Land to the North of Wolverhampton Road (NGR SJ 75439 07370), near Shifnal, Shropshire. A Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI, Wessex Archaeology 2015) was submitted to, and approved by, Shropshire Council Archaeology Service, prior to the commencement of fieldwork. Archaeology was identified across the Site, although dating evidence was scarce. The only dating evidence recovered was a single perforated sherd of Early Bronze Age beaker pot recovered from a pit in the northern area. The pot was abraded and likely residual in a later context; however, the small pit was itself cut into an earlier larger sub-circular pit, and the likelihood is that the features are of prehistoric date. Pits, gullies and ditches were identified elsewhere on site, many of which had a common type of fill - dark grey silty sand; however, the features lacked dateable evidence and informative environmental material. The results of this evaluation did not correlate strongly with the previous geophysical survey of the site (Stratascan 2014). Most of the archaeological features discovered during this evaluation were located in areas where the geophysical survey did not detect any anomalies. The programme of Strip, Map and Sample demonstrated that no further significant archaeological features survive within the locale of the features identified within Trenches 2 and 7 of the 2015 evaluation. The probable Early Bronze Age pit identified within SMS1 would appear to be an isolated feature, suggesting a low level of prehistoric activity across the development area. The boundary ditch identified within SMSs is not securely dated but the presence of a nearby furrow on the same alignment would suggest that the ditch is part a medieval to post-medieval field system.
