Abstract:
Archaeology South East was commissioned by McCulloch Homes to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land adjacent to St. Joseph's Community Centre, Pelton Road, London Borough of Greenwich, in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The evaluation comprised the excavation of a single trial trench measuring 11m by 1.9m. The natural geology, consisting of fine yellow sand was encountered at a maximum height of +0.14m OD at the northern end of te trench, falling away to -0.30m OD to the south, and suggesting that the site occupies th southern slope of a localised rise in the underlying gravel, perhaps representing an eyot or similar topographic feature. Two possible features cut into the underlying gravel, though undated, may represent evidence for activity peripheral to a known Bronze Age trackway within peat deposits recorded some 100m to the north of the site. These features were sealed by a thick layer of alluvium, in turn overlain by a layer of post-medieval garden soil. A brick lined cess pit of 18th-19th century date, cut through this garden soil horizon probably comprised a feature within the back plot of a contemporary dwelling fronting Pelton Road. The entire sequence was capped with a layer of 20th century made ground.
