Abstract: |
Fieldwalking, geophysical survey and trial trenching conducted in advance of the construction of a new road between the M58, M57 A59 junction at Switch Island and Thornton, both in Sefton, Merseyside. The evaluation was conducted following a programme of fieldwalking with surface artefact collection and geophysical survey. A total of 70 trenches were excavated along the route of the road. In general the evaluation confirmed the results of the geophysical survey, the only identifiable deposits related to post-medieval field boundaries and land drains. Additional fragments of medieval ceramics and possible Roman pottery and industrial waste were recovered from the central section of the route, though these were very widely spread and could not be related to any below ground deposits. |
