Abstract:
This photographic survey was carried out in advance of the conversion of the former Methodist Chapel in Gainford, County Durham (National Grid Reference NZ 16977 16757), into a residential property in response to a condition attached to planning consent. The Chapel consists of a main chapel building, constructed in 1834, a meeting room built to the rear for the Wesleyan Sunday School in 1897 and a flat-roofed extension built in 1928. The building lies within a Conservation Area in Gainford, but is not listed. It was recorded to English Heritage Level 2 survey standards. This report summarises the results of on-site photographic recording and research undertaken from local records to establish the history of the Chapel.
