Abstract:
As part of two projects at Hampton Court Palace a series of archaeological test trenches were excavated. Two trenches (TR I and TR V) were excavated either side of a gateway between the Great Fountain Garden and the 20th Century Garden whilst three test trenches (TR II, TR III and TR IV) were excavated either side of the canal to the west of the gateway. The aim of these investigations was to better understand the structural and architectural elements as well as to investigate and record the presence of any archaeologically significant features or deposits in advance of the installation of a footbridge across the northern section of the Great Fountain Garden canal and the conservation of the 20th Century Garden Gate inserted into the historic Tijou fencing. Trenches I and V exposed a stepped threshold and several brick foundation structures associated with the Portland stone plinth supporting the iron railings of the palisade dating to the late 17th century. The trenches excavated alongside the canal exposed an earlier timber shoring structure which may relate to the original construction from the 1700's (Trench II), and a possible north-south running gully probably dating to the 19th century (Trench III).
