Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was carried out by Archaeological Services Durham University at Pyde Drove, Woolavington, Somerset in May 2013. It identified a pre-Roman peat deposit underlying the site. A tidal estuary developed over this peat deposit and was the site of a Roman salt production industry. Possible salterns are present within the site. A post-Roman alluvial clay around 2-3m deep overlies these earlier remains. A medieval / post-medieval field system overlies this clay to the north of the site and potentially extends into it. |
