Abstract: |
Stowe Barton, Kilkhampton, North Cornwall, now owned by the National Trust, is a former property of the Grenville family and an elaborate mansion was built here in the 17th century. Rebuilding of previously collapsed parts of a garden wall adjoining a road revealed stratigraphy relating to an earlier and much lower level of road surface behind the wall. The garden wall acts as a retaining structure for a listed 17th century carriage wash and roadway. A culvert , still carrying an active spring or drain, was found to run beneath the roadway. Blocking of the culvert had probably caused collapse of the wall in this part. Collapse of the wall further south may have been caused by weak wall foundations, vegetation damage or perhaps removal of some architectural/decorative feature after Stowe House was demolished. Considerable raising of the roadway is also likely to have put additional pressure on the structure. |
