Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation on the site of a proposed development at Largs Campus, North Ayrshire was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group. An 8% evaluation was required of the c. 6.5 ha site involving the machine excavation of linear trenches. A total of 35 evaluation trenches were excavated, revealing significant archaeological features on a small knoll at the top of a steep slope in the centre of the development area. Most of the features were small pits, with possibly two small linear features also. No artefacts were obtained from the excavated features, and only small flecks of charcoal were noted within the deposits. None of the pits appeared to form structures at this stage, with the probability being that the pits relate to prehistoric activity on a vantage point at the top of the hill, with related settlement areas located elsewhere. Further archaeological works will be required in accordance with the principles set out in Scottish Planning Policy (2014) and Planning and Archaeology 2/2011 (2011). These works will be defined by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service, who advise North Ayrshire Council on archaeological matters. |
