Abstract:
Archaeology South-east were commissioned by Pentair Building Contractors to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land at Belle Vue garage site to the rear of 110-112, Albert Street, Slough in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The work consisted on the initial excavation of a trench measuring 22.50m by 1.80m sited within the footprint of the proposed development (Trench 1). This was followed by the excavation of around 14.50m of additional trenching (Trenches 2 and 3) to further elucidate the nature of the archaeological remains and the overall stratigraphic sequence recorded. The underlying natural Taplow Gravels were observed at a maximum height of 25.61m OD at the northern end of Trench 1, falling away to 25.44m OD to the southwest (Trench 2) and 25.13m OD to the southeast (Trench 3). Archaeological features revealed include a single WNW-ESE aligned ditch and a small pit, both of which were undated, which are considered to represent relatively low level agricultural land use on the site. These features were sealed by a subsoil horizon and layer of recent made ground that provides a total depth of overburden measuring around 0.60m in depth.
