Abstract: |
A detailed magnetometer survey was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd, on behalf of QJ Energy Ltd, over a single wind turbine and access/cable route at South Petherwin near Launceston in Cornwall. The results demonstrate the presence of a positive curvilinear anomaly with an entrance on the western edge within the cable/access route immediately west of the turbine area. This appears to relate to a penannular enclosure ditch, possibly containing associated anomalies within. To the east of this, within the turbine area, are a number of rectilinear anomalies. The responses are far less well defined than the circular enclosure ditch; however, their morphology indicates that they may relate to a number of rectangular enclosures. Other positive linear anomalies can be seen within this part of the site, and it is possible that they too have archaeological potential. A number of clusters of positive and negative anomalies have also been located, and it is not certain if some relate to buried stones and pits or have an association with thermoremanent magnetism. The cable/access route also crosses at least three former field boundaries. |
