Abstract:
ARCHAS Cultural Heritage Ltd were contracted to undertake a programme of archaeological mitigation in advance of development at a former commercial property at 62-64 St John's Road, Corstorphine in the City of Edinburgh. The planning condition installed by City of Edinburgh Council Archaeology Service required that all existing buildings on site were subject to a Level II Standing Building Survey, while 10% of the proposed development area be subject to archaeological evaluation. Both phases of work were to take place in advance of development. Prior to the appointment of ARCHAS, a number of structures were demolished prior to building recording taking place. The remaining structures were subjected to a programme of building assessment, while existing historical and recent images were consulted along with architectural elevations in order to provide a picture of those structures demolished. The building recording and assessment showed the demolished buildings dated to the first half of the 20th century. The remaining structure on site is likely to be of 19th century date, shown from pictorial evidence to be in place from at least c.1871. No older or relict features were noted and the building displayed no significant alteration. The archaeological evaluation involved the mechanical excavation of 6 evaluation trenches across the footprint of the proposed development. This revealed a number of negatively cut features, all of which were shown to be 19th-20th century in date. The site has clearly undergone a significant deal of landscaping, particularly in the footprint of the demolished 20th century structures.
