Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by CFA Archaeology Ltd in April and May 2013 on land at the western corner of Holyrood Road and Viewcraig Gardens, City of Edinburgh. This monitoring revealed evidence of buildings of probably early - mid 19th century date. The map evidence shows buildings first appearing on the map by Scott (1805) and they vary slightly through time but maintain a similar footprint. No depictions appear on the maps to assist in deriving what function they may have had. The excavated evidence suggests that the buildings had a commercial use rather than a residential one and the majority of the evidence points towards covered areas being used for animal stalling. This is most likely to be for horse stables which may have been for working animals for the many surrounding industries. The range of buildings that have survived have done so because they were terraced in to the hill side and protected by that. All the other buildings that are mapped as lying within the site would have been at a higher level and completely removed during the later development of the area.
