Abstract: |
Core samples were obtained from 14 different oak timbers within this cruck building at Grange Farm, Norton. Of these samples, 13 were analysed, one sample having distorted and unmeasurable rings. The analysis of these 13 samples produced two site chronologies. The first site chronology, comprising eight samples from what appear to be primary timbers of the building, has a combined overall length of 164 rings. These 164 rings can be dated as spanning the years 1436 to 1599. Interpretation of the sapwood on the dated samples of this first group would indicate that the main primary timbers of the cruck building were felled in 1599. It is likely that another dated timber, a spine beam once holding the first-floor frame, was felled sometime between c. 1610 and c. 1630. The second site chronology comprises two samples, from the north and south cruck blades of the east-most truss. This group has an overall length of 78 rings. Unfortunately these rings cannot be dated |
