Abstract:
RSK Environment Ltd undertook a Level 1 Historic Building Survey of 7 buildings forming Harold Wood Railway Station on behalf of Costain during March 2015. The recording was carried out in mitigation of changes to the station associated with Crossrail works being carried out by Costain. The survey consisted of a photographic and written record of the existing structures underpinned by documentary research to help date and interpret individual buildings. The station complex is a palimpsest of structures from a series of station rebuilds and refurbishments: the forthcoming Crossrail works represents the latest in a line of upgrades. Surviving portions of buildings associated with the earliest station which opened in 1868 were not identified: the earliest structure surviving at the site is a ticket office dated to the period 1881-1896. Most of the buildings currently in use were established during the early 20th Century, between 1920 and 1939. There have been minor additions to the building stock during the intervening period and modifications to all the buildings.
