Abstract:
A detailed gradiometry survey was conducted over approximately 12 hectares of grass and scrubland at the Co-op sports ground and Abbey Meadows sites. On the Abbey Meadows site, a number of archaeological features were identified in the form of historic field boundaries and former footpaths, both visible on maps from 1886. A small number of positive linear features are apparent, but the isolated and weak nature of the anomalies makes further interpretation difficult. The Meadows site also contains a former cricket strip, a possible field boundary and a large amount of magnetic disturbance in the form of scattered debris, made ground and strong point anomalies caused by ferrous objects. Some geological or pedological variation also exists. The Co-op sports ground contains a football pitch which caused a lot of magnetic disturbance around its boundaries. Several strongly magnetic features appear in the east of the sports ground and probably represent modern buried services. A large amount of strong and scattered magnetic debris and magnetic spikes are present on site along with some amorphous magnetic variation, caused by geology or pedology.
