Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology in May 2014 at Lodge Farm, Broughton, Cambridgeshire. Nine trenches were excavated. The site was considered to have some potential for evidence of later prehistoric and/or Roman activity. The site overlooks a shallow valley and is in a favourable location for settlement of this datel in this area, later prehistoric and/or Roman settlement activity can reasonably be expected to occur at c.1km intervals. Historic aerial photographs and a geophysical survey indicated the presence of a ploughed-out medieval ridge and furrow field system at the site. The evaluation recorded the ploughed-out remnants of medieval furrow bases, overlaid by post-medieval and modern land drains. This confirmed the results of the geophysical survey. There was no evidence for pre-medieval activity at the site and the site appears to have been in agricultural and pastoral use since the medieval era. |
