Abstract: |
An archaeological trench evaluation on land west of Oakland Park South, Sticklepath, Barnstaple, Devon (SS 538 328), was undertaken by AC archaeology during August 2017. The evaluation comprised the machine-excavation of four trenches totaling 85m in length, with each trench 1.6m wide. These were positioned to target anomalies identified by a previous geophysical survey. There was localised evidence for a prehistoric presence, with a large sherd of Bronze Age pottery found in a shallow possible tree-throw, as well as residual prehistoric worked flint flakes from a ditch. Further activity on site appears limited to long-term agricultural use, with linear features recorded likely to represent field boundaries of likely medieval to post-medieval date. A small number of medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds were recovered from the topsoil and subsoil layers. |
