Abstract:
Planning permission was granted by Central Bedfordshire Council for the erection of a new agricultural storage building at Black Moor Farm, New Road, Maulden, Bedfordshire. A heritage statement submitted as part of the planning application concluded that the development area had the potential to contain Roman archaeological remains, associated with the high-status Roman villa and settlement site at Ruxox Farm, c. 800m to the south-west. The investigations revealed two groups of ditches on NE-SW and NW-SE alignments. They are interpreted as boundary features, demarcating enclosures of Roman date. They comprised multiple, re-cut, parallel ditches, suggesting that the boundaries were maintained over a considerable period of time. The relatively large quantities of pottery and other artefacts within the ditches suggest that the enclosures were associated with domestic occupation, although no building remains were found within the small investigation area.
