Abstract:
This report presents the results of an archaeological magnetometer survey at the above site, hereafter referred to as the survey area. It has been prepared for AC Archaeology Ltd on behalf of clients The magnetic responses across the survey area were sufficient to be able to differentiate between anomalies representing possible archaeological features and background magnetic responses. Eleven magnetic anomaly groups were mapped as representing potential archaeological deposits or features. Of these, one group represents a field boundary recorded on the St Gorran tithe map but not on later historical maps. One group may denote a small group of pits or natural deposits. Three parallel, linear groups may represent archaeological deposits but cannot be further characterised using the survey data. One curvilinear group may reflect an unrecorded barrow forming part of the group of suspected Bronze Age barrows found in the fields to the northwest of the application area. One group has characteristics that can be associated with in-situ, highly heated deposits. The remaining anomaly groups are linear and curvilinear anomalies that often denote fragments of former field or enclosure boundaries of unknown date and possibly of more than one phase of past land management.
