Abstract:
CAU was commissioned by English Heritage to assess the associative historical values of Tintagel Castle to help to inform the potential impacts of a new footbridge linking its mainland and island elements. Archaeological evidence shows that Tintagel Castle was the location of an early medieval high status site and trading port and a medieval castle constructed by Earl Richard of Cornwall. Thanks to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Sir Thomas Malory and the Romantic Movement, Tintagel Castle became popularly identified as the birthplace of the legendary post-Roman leader King Arthur. In the process, an association between the site and the parallel legend of Tristan and Isolde has become almost entirely eclipsed. Tintagel Castle is a site where exponents of the Sublime showed people how to relate to dramatic natural landscapes; the view of the Castle and Haven painted by J.M.W. Turner in 1815 showing the Castle perched on towering cliffs established a way of experiencing the site in which its legendary associations are reinforced by the dramatic landscape in which it is located. Literature, poetry and musical compositions relating to Tintagel also resulted from the Victorian revival of interest in Arthuriana. Tintagel has particularly strong associative values which vary considerably between the groups who relate to this site. A visit to Tintagel can offer a variety of experiences, and English Heritage is working to interpret the site in ways which set out its values but do not give preference to any single view of its importance.
