Abstract:
Two trenches had previously been opened within the site as part of a wider evaluation at 8-15 Aylesbury Street and 159-173 St John Street under the site code ASS90 (LA6, 11 (1991) 304) revealing 18th- and 19th-century cellars and a stone floor. The current watching brief was carried out on excavations for two lift pits, three secant pile locations and eight pile caps. Natural gravels were overlain by a silty garden soil which probably dates to the Tudor period when the site lay within the gardens of the Priory of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. In the southern part of the site, this was cut by a north-south aligned red brick wall probably relating to the cellars of a 19th-century public house documented to have stood nearby. A pile cap on the west side of the site found a floor surface composed of York stone slabs above the garden soil and this was interpreted as a continuation of the floor found during the 1990 works. At the western end of the north side of the site, a brick-vaulted service duct with disused drains and pipes was observed. This may relate to terraced buildings shown on OS maps of 1871-1916. Modern disturbance had removed any other structural remains of 18th-century or earlier date. Modern deposits and concrete sealed the archaeology.
