Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) at the request of Andrew Trendell of AJT Construction (the Client) during groundworks associated with the residential development of land formerly part of the Lidgeys Garage, Tregony Hill, Tregony, Cornwall. The work was carried out by P. Webb on 5th December 2016 in accordance with a WSI (Boyd 2016) drawn up in consultation with Charles Johns, Senior Development Officer (Historic Environment) (SDOHE), Cornwall Council. Tregony, 10km east of Truro, is a historic village on the east bank of the River Fal. The development site is located in the centre of the village, on the south side of Tregony Hill near its junction with Well and Fore Streets, and comprises a single plot formerly part of the Lidgeys coach garage, at a height of c.37m OD (see Figure 1). Much of the site was cleared and developed at the end of the 20th century, though the existing garage structure that occupies the plot was retained. The soils of this area are the well drained fine loamy and fine silty soils of the Denbigh 1 Association bordering the well drained fine loamy soils of the Denbigh 2 Association (SSEW 1983), overlying the sandstone and argillaceous rocks of the Portscatho Formation (BGS 2016). The site lies within a broad zone designated under the Cornwall Historic Landscape Characterisation as Settlement: older core; being the medieval core of the village (first recorded in 1049). No archaeological work has been undertaken on the site itself, but limited watching-briefs have been carried out in the surrounding area.
