Abstract:
South West Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land east of Roseland Terrace, Zelah, St. Allan, Cornwall. This work was undertaken to determine the archaeological potential of the site prior to planning determination. The site consists of three small fields/paddocks located between the houses in Zelah fronting onto Henver Road (former A30) and a small residential housing estate, Roseland Terrance. These fields are in agricultural use, and the remains of small c.1950s farm buildings are present on the site. Five evaluation trenches with a total length of 180m were opened. Four features were identified, including a historic field boundary. The remaining three features included a shallow elongate pit or ditch terminus, a shallow post-hole and a sub-circular pit with evidence for in-situ burning. This feature cannot be closely dated; similar structural evidence has been reported from features dating from the Neolithic through to the medieval period, but on balance it is likely this feature is Prehistoric in date. There was no dating evidence and the small number of finds were limited to 18th to 20th century pottery, glass and clay pipe stems. On balance, the archaeological potential of the site would appear to be fairly low, although the burnt pit would suggest a low level of Prehistoric activity in the immediate area.
