Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting, on behalf of Peveril Homes Ltd, to undertake an archaeological evaluation on land off Holborn View, Codnor, Derbyshire, centred on National Grid Reference SK 41468, 50010. A planning application was submitted in 2012 (AVA/2012/0965) and was granted on appeal in 2014 (APP/M1005/A/13/2199128) for the erection of residential dwellings on land to the west of Holborn View, Codnor. In order to fulfil archaeological conditions attached to the planning consent, a programme of geophysical survey was undertaken which revealed a limited range of anomalies associated with ridge and furrow and possible post-medieval field boundaries. Eight trial trenches targeted these anomalies as well as 'blank areas' without any geophysical responses. Trench 3, in the northeast of the site, identified a possible field boundary and drainage gully. These features correspond to a north to south aligned anomaly and associated trend identified in the geophysical survey. No dating evidence was recovered from these features despite additional hand excavation to retrieve finds from their fills. These features may align with a northnorthwest/ south-southeast aligned field boundary shown in the field immediately to the northwest of the site on OS mapping of 1881. Ridge and furrow was also revealed in two of the trenches. The remaining trenches were archaeologically sterile.
