Abstract:
An archaeological trench evaluation carried out at on land at Babylon Lane, Stumpy Cross, Silverton, Devon was undertaken by AC Archaeology in August 2014. The proposed development area occupies approximately 8 hectares of agricultural land. It lies 1km to the southwest of Silverton and to the northwest of Stumpy Cross formed by the junction of Babylon Lane and Kenson Hill. A previous geophysical survey of the site interpreted a circular linear anomaly, the character of which had the potential to relate to prehistoric settlement or ritual activity. It also depicted a series of straight linear anomalies that were considered to potentially relate to former agricultural boundaries. The evaluation comprised the machine-excavation of 15 trenches totalling 390m in length, with each trench measuring 1.65m wide. These were positioned to investigate the anomalies interpreted from the previous geophysical survey. The trench evaluation recorded the presence of a possible plough-truncated Bronze Age barrow, comprising a two-segment perimeter ditch and central pit. A series of potentially contemporary ditch boundaries representing an early field system were also present in the wider area.
