Abstract: |
The features identified in Trench FL/008 near Coneyhatch relate to buildings associated with Backhill farmstead in the 19th century, and which were demolished some time before 1902. The findings indicate that the immediate environs at Kempston Hill and the farmstead of Backhill were modified in the 19th century and early 20th century. No remains were found which could be positively identified as the remains of either building depicted on the 1868 map lying within the trench, but the box drains serving the buildings survived. A number of pits were also identified, at least some of which may be the product of activities taking place around the farmstead buildings, while others may be the remains of stone holes from stone extraction. |
