Abstract: |
In November 2001 Cotswold Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological earthwork survey of the south eastern portion of Mare Pit Wood, adjacent to West Hoathly Brickworks, Sharpthorne, West Sussex. It is proposed to extract clay from this area as part of an expansion of the existing quarry serving the brickworks. This work forms part of a continuing programme of archaeological works at the site. The survey contained in this report completes the coverage of Mare Pit Wood, including those areas not surveyed during a previous phase of work in February 2000. A detailed earthwork survey of the remainder of the wood was carried out, revealing a series of phases of activity, including features interpreted as iron mine pits, as well as a later marl pit. |
