Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on groundworks necessitated by repairs to the Brecon to Tirley gas pipeline, in the vicinity of Brampton Abbotts, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. A Roman site was discovered during the watching brief. Three main phases of activity were identified: clearance and establishment of a small settlement in the late Iron Age or very early Roman period, expansion in the later 1st century AD and the early part of the 2nd century AD, followed by a reduction in activity from the later part of the 2nd century AD. Although no coherent structures were positively identified, there was a sufficient volume of domestic waste to indicate that settlement took place on the site throughout its life. The site was perhaps most notable for the evidence of iron working it contained. Both smelting of ore and smithing of the resultant iron were carried out close to the investigated area. The ore was probably imported from the Forest of Dean and smelted in a slag-tapping furnace. Little evidence of post-Roman exploitation of the area was found.
