Abstract:
Between 2004 and 2016 Archaeological Solutions carried out Monitoring of Works under Archaeological Supervision and Control at Grange Farm, Horstead with Stanninghall, Norfolk (NGR: TG 2486 2036). The monitoring was undertaken during topsoil stripping in advance of mineral extraction. A previous fieldwalking survey recovered relatively few artefacts, despite the favourable conditions for the survey. These finds included prehistoric worked flints, several medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds, post-medieval tiles and small quantities of modern tile and metalwork. Monitoring of topsoil stripping ahead of mineral extraction revealed ditches and various irregular discrete features, the majority of which were interpreted as tree hollows. Most of the ditches are likely to have been of relatively recent date, the only possible exceptions being two parallel features that may have defined some form of drove way. Although the tree hollows produced small numbers of prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval finds it is likely that most, if not all, of these feature were also fairly modern, as apparently the local farmer recalls the area being wooded.
