Abstract:
The quarry, formerly known as Tresmarrow Quarry, was documented in the early 19th century, when, unusually, descriptions of notable slate products, and dated dialect verses mentioning the site, were published. Earlier quarrying is tangible through survival of part of Quarry Lane leading to Launceston. Development of the quarry in Victorian times is recorded. Despite later filling of the two main pits with waste, and loss of quarry buildings, the scale and some of the methods of past working can be seen, particularly around the south side and on the north. Other, buried remains may survive below ground. The spoil on the south supports woodland and is faced with the quarry stone, contributing semi-natural diversity and local distinctiveness. A stone marks the parish boundary overwhelmed by these dumps, evoking their age. There is potential for identifying slate produced here in the wider locality, and for further documentary study. The site also captures part of an abandoned approach to Trebursye flanked by trees, an important, articulating element of a lost ornamental landscape. Mitigation proposed, subject to approval by the planning authority, includes watching brief in specified areas; and monitoring for particular areas of quarry spoil, to ensure these remain undisturbed with their earthworks and buried remains, and mature woodland with intrinsic and screening value.
