Abstract:
The excavation revealed no evidence of significant archaeological features or deposits. Trench 1 contained a shallow post-medieval furrow orientated NNE-SSW [1004]/[1006], while Trench 2 contained the remains of a probable post-medieval/modern hedge [2004] running parallel to the current hedgerow. The alignment of these features appears to reflect that of a sub-rectangular enclosure of unknown date and function, previously identified by geophysical survey, no evidence of which appears on any of the available historic mapping relating to this area, suggesting a potentially early origin, predating the existing field system. However, there was no conclusive evidence to demonstrate that these two linear features were associated with the sub-rectangular enclosure feature indicated on the geophysical survey and, moreover, samples taken from the fills of these features appeared to suggest a relatively late (possibly post-medieval) date.
