Abstract:
Building recording and a watching brief on the conversion of the building and associated ground works was undertaken on behalf of D A Cook (Builders Limited) at Abbey Gate, Merstow Green, Evesham (NGR ref SP 0360 4365; HER refs WSM 35758, 35759 and 35760). An extensive programme of building recording elucidated the medieval structure and history of the building's alterations between the 16th and 20th century. Abbey Gate is a substantial stone structure that was first constructed as the Great Gate of Evesham Abbey around 1330, when it had a central gate tower and flanking range. The structure was one of the few abbey buildings to survive the Dissolution and in 1640 was described by Habington as being 'as large and as stately as any at this time in England'. It was partly used as a barn in the late 17th century when it was bought by Edward Rudge, who re-roofed the building and tenanted it out. The tenant converted the building into a house, heavily re-decorating the interior, blocking up the main gate passage and demolishing part of the south flanking range, in which space new brick outbuildings were built. In the 19th century the house was converted into two properties, one of which was later bought by the Cox family, who used the outbuildings to run a timber yard. The Cox family acquired the rest of the building in the 1990s, when it underwent numerous alterations in order to be used as offices for the timber yard and a construction company. A watching brief on the groundworks on the site revealed evidence of demolished walls of medieval and 18th and 19th century date, some of which can be traced through documentary evidence to the 18th century constructions.
