Abstract:
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was undertaken in associated with the construction of a new public house, car park, electrical substation and associated works on land north of the former A30, site of Cranbrook New Town Centre, London Road, Cranbrook, Devon (SY 01357 95455). The site occupied parts of two adjacent pasture plots to the north of London Road (the current B3174). It was positioned on flat ground with the underlying solid geology comprising mudstone of the Aylesbeare Mudstone Group. The principal interest in the site was its close proximity to London Road, which represents the route of the Roman road that extended between Exeter and Honiton (Devon Historic Environment Record reference MDV1875). The work comprised the machine-excavation of 5 trenches totalling 80m in length, with each trench 10m or 20m long and 1.6m wide. No archaeological features were exposed in any of the trenches and there were no finds recovered.
