Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment in advance of a proposed development at North Tawton, Devon. There is no direct evidence for activity prior to the Neolithic in the study area. Aerial photography has identified a number of square ditched enclosures on and near the site - this may indicate a significant later prehistoric archaeological resource. There is a possible Neolithic mortuary enclosure 450 m to the north of the site while Bronze Age barrows are also noted 700 m to the south. Roman activity was focused 600 m to the southeast of the site. The presence of nearby Romano-British pottery assemblages may also suggest the continued occupation of later prehistoric settlement. The battle of Sampford Courtenay (1549) took place immediately to the north of the site - all other evidence from the medieval and post-medieval periods points to predominantly agricultural usage. |
