Abstract: |
An excavation took place on land west of Westergate, following an evaluation, in advance of the residential development of the site. Residual struck flint of prehistoric date was recovered from the site. The earliest cut features comprised a single short section of gully and pit of Middle/ Late Bronze Age date. There was considerable evidence for the occupation of the site during the Middle/ Late Iron Age with two areas of unenclosed settlement. One area comprised a single heavily truncated ring gully, interpreted as the eavesdrip gully of a roundhouse. The second area, comprised three structures; a convincing roundhouse, a 6-post structure, and a small rectangular enclosure or pen, with a potentially curated polished Neolithic axe deposited in the south-east corner. At least three phases of enclosure of the landscape may have been associated with these settlement areas. The first two comprised sub-rectangular enclosures with north-west entrances and possible associated field systems. Both enclosures were situated to the east of the settlement areas. A Late Iron Age/ Early Roman field system superseded the settlement. |
