Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Dodford Priory, Dodford, Worcestershire (NGR SO 93255 72834). It was undertaken on behalf of Ian Barnes in response to the requirements of Historic England, following the identification of an oil leak and later installing a replacement oil tank and pipes, for which Scheduled Monument Consent was granted. The area is within the grounds of a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM 30022; NHLE UID 1018278) and therefore potentially includes heritage assets with archaeological interest, the significance of which may be affected by the ground works. In remediation works demolition rubble with a 19th Century date and a post-medieval ditch running north-south parallel to the structure were recorded. Monitoring of the new oil pipe installation revealed the sandstone wall foundations a building that was extant on maps from 1886 up to 1927 and was demolished by 1949. This is likely to have been a stables or outbuilding. No other significant archaeological deposits, layers, structures or horizons were identified and natural clay was recorded at 0.14 - 0.30m below the present ground surface.
