Abstract: |
An unusual two-part building comprised a slate-roofed and stone-walled shed open to the S with a large horticultural frame or hot bed abutting one gable. A stoking pit in the shed allowed fuelling of a stove which channelled hot air through an underground heating duct below the earth in the hot bed and out through a chimney. The stove, made by Goddard of Nottingham, appears to have been manufactured between 1851 and 1874, which fits with the OS map evidence which indicates that the horticultural frame was built by 1870, but the shed with the heating system added by 1899. This elaborate structure may have been a pinery, allowing the 19th-century owners of Auquharney House to enjoy the fashion of growing pineapples. |
