Abstract: |
This buildings survey of the 13th- or 14th-century gatehouse of the Bishop's Palace at Exeter was made in advance of alterations and repairs at the gatehouse to convert it for use as the Bishop's Offices. This report describes the first phase of works at the gatehouse. The building is shown to be of late 13th or early 14th-century date on an older site and to retain parts of its original roof structure. The building is interpreted as housing lodgings for important palace officials and, perhaps, and ecclesiastical courtroom and prison. |
